How to get clear skin
11One of the most frustrating parts about life is bad skin and acne. Some people are fortunate enough to only get the occasional blemish, while others, no matter what age, are plagued with harsh, red pimples and bad skin. It can quickly become a root to problems like social humiliation, low confidence, not attracting to the opposite sex, etc.

The Nitty Gritty
First and foremost, you must understand that acne is primarily caused by genetics. Hygiene, lifestyle and diet play a role in increasing acne symptoms, but all in all the reason that some people get acne and others do not is all related to our genetic makeup. Acne comes in several forms – traditional acne, blackheads, white heads and cystic acne. The traditional acne bump is round and reddish. It is filled with a puss like substance. White heads are small and flat with a hard white substance inside. Blackheads are black and very small bumps above the pores. Finally, cystic acne is painful, reddish blisters that are puss filled. Acne can exist anywhere on the body where there are sweat glands. This means you can find blemishes on your back, butt, scalp, genital region and legs although it is primarily focused on the face, neck and shoulder region of a persons body.
One of the biggest mistakes that people trying to get rid of acne make is popping the blemishes. There is a proper way to do this and it is primarily done by an esthetician at a salon. Popping a blemish incorrectly can lead to bruising the capillaries in the skin, irritating the skin causing more redness and swelling or scraping skin off which can lead to scars.
How to Properly “Pop” a Blemish
- Wash your hands, face and neck with a steam activated cleanser. The steam helps open up your pores so that the wash is better able to reach deep down and clean out bacteria.
- Apply a benzoyl peroxide based cream onto the blemish to help immediately kill bacteria after it is popped.
- Wrap your index fingers with a thick tissue to protect the skin from being torn by finger nails.
- Carefully apply pressure around the edge of the blemish, applying pressure in a downward (into the skin) motion. Pulsate your pressure for several seconds, if the blemish does not begin to give or pop then it is not ready. Never force the bacteria from a blemish as it will ruin your skin. If a blemish is not ready, then give it a few days to “ripen.”
- Once the blemish is popped, immediately clean your face with a deep cleanser to remove any bacteria that was in the pores.
How to Properly Care for Your Skin

Using the right skin care regimen is critical to treating acne. A basic skin care kit should consist of a cleanser, toner, lotion and mask. Choose the cleansers that are best suited for your skin type. Skin cleansers are divided into two main categories – dry to normal skin, normal to oily skin and oily to acne prone skin.
- Wash your face and neck, morning and night with a mild deep cleanser. The best choice is one that is steam activated as it will open up the pores and give the best cleaning. Use water that is warm but not hot. Water that is to warm will rupture the capillaries in the skin and cause redness where as water that is to cool will not allow the pores to open for proper cleaning.
- Apply toner using a cotton ball to the face and neck. Choose a toner that contains sacylic acid if you have problematic skin.
- Dab lotion all over your face and neck, then rub it in. Be sure to cover your entire face including behind the ears, on your eyelids and around the nose. Lotion naturally offers mild sun protection which will prevent damaging UVA/UVB rays from irritating the skin.
- Apply a pore cleansing mask twice per week if you have problematic acne and once every two weeks if you have the occasional breakout. Creams that contain sacylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are available as a spot treatment to reduce redness and blemish size of acne.
- Use a microdermabrasion scrub once per week to sloth off dead skin cells and to help prevent acne for clearer skin.
Note. Be shure to use skin care products appropriately, using them to much or to often may damage your skin even more. Always follow the provided instructions.
Dietary Changes
As wonderful as greasy and processed foods taste, they wreak havoc on our bodies. Everything that is wrong on the inside of us is reflected in our skin. In order to maintain clear, radiant skin you should drink at least eight glasses of water per day and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid an excess of foods that are greasy, processed, fatty or high in sugars. All of these foods slow digestion and prevent our bodies from absorbing the vital nutrients it needs. Anyone with serious acne should also avoid dairy as it increases a persons chances of getting regular acne breakouts. If your acne is not manageable then seek a professional alternative from a licensed dermatologist.
Lifestyle Change
Excessive stress, smoking, drinking and environment all play factors in causing breakouts. Use a skin calming lotion daily to help keep acne at bay during tough situations. The vitamins will actually calm your skin even though you are not calm. Rays from the sun cause pigment changes in our skin and also increase acne by irritating the skin. Some physicians will recommend that a patient use artificial tanning once or twice per week. While the rays from tanning beds are not the best for your skin as a whole, they are excellent at drying out your pores. Closed pores means that your body is less likely to trigger a breakout. Smoking and drinking are two habits that greatly increase your chances of getting acne. The best way to deal with this is to limit what you drink or smoke or stop both all together.
More Tips on how To Get Clear Skin
- Wash your bedding at least once per week and replace pillows every year. Bedding that is not regularly washed becomes a breeding ground for bacteria that causes acne.
- Women should remove all makeup and lotions from their skin at night so that the skin is able to breathe. Mineral makeup is the best option for those with problematic skin because it offers a natural alternative to the heavy duty liquid and cream makeups that are available in department stores today.
- Get eight hours of sleep is an important factor of taking care of your skin. At night, while we sleep, our bodies have the opportunity to rejuvenate themselves and rest. Getting at least eight hours of sleep is crucial for healthy skin as is drinking plenty of water.
